Cory Aquino (1933-2009)

Cory Aquino passed away through a cardio resperatory arrest around 3am of August 1, 2009 (Saturday) at the age of 76. She has been fighting cancer, which is at stage 4, for sometime now. This prompted her youngest daughter, Kris Aquino, to miss most of her tv shows just to be by her mother's side.

Cory Aquino was Philippines first female President. Her remains will be at Dela Salle Greenhills according to news reports.

Born Maria Corazon 'Cory' Cojuanco Aquino, Cory was the 11th Philippine President following the 20-year regime of Ferdinand Marcos. She was succeeded by former President Fidel Ramos.

When her popular husband was alive, Cory was quite content living in his shadow and found no need or inclination to speak publicly about anything during the first 50 years of her life. But Ninoy’s assassination in August 1983 made her the most prominent victim of an oppressive regime. She began sharing her pain and, before long, she grew comfortable speaking about themes like freedom, democracy, spirituality and People Power.

Cory has her share of intellectual gifts but hardly found need to over-exert her mind as the wife of a consummate politician and as mother of five. As historical circumstances reshaped her role in life, she drew from her main source of strength: her faith. This served her well during the tormenting years of Ninoy’s incarceration and the extremely challenging times after his death. She went through moments of doubt and uncertainty but each time found solace and guidance through her personal communion with God.

Paintings
In 1996, Cory took an active interest in painting under the tutelage of artist Jeff Consumo. Next to prayer, painting became a favored mode of keeping her mind active and her sense of humanity intact. Although she has participated in a joint exhibit with friends and has sold some of her works to raise funds for her advocacies, she does not profess to be a professional painter. She likes to paint flowers and women, usually in oil or acrylic on canvas.

Mrs. Aquino has remained active in helping nurture the fragile Philippine democracy that was restored during her presidency. Largely through the Benigno S. Aquino, Jr. Foundation (BSAF), she has supported programs that promote people empowerment, peace and human rights. In recent years, she has devoted much time and energy to strengthening the infrastructure that would transform micro-enterprise development into a potent vehicle for raising “people power” to the next level, slowly creating a broad middle class that would fortify the foundations of Philippine democracy.

The fourth installment to the Altarejos-Bonife team up is 'Little Boy/Big Boy' which had its 'invitational' premiere at Robinsons Galleria. Paolo Rivero, Douglas Robinson, May-i Fabros and Renz Valerio were there to meet the press.

Little Boy/Big Boy tries to understand the nuances of homosexual partnerships and the way to make people around you understand it.

Funny Tides: Ricky Berens 'Wardrobe' Malfunction

U.S. Swimmer and Beijing relay gold medalist Ricky Berens tore the back of his swimsuit in a qualifying heat of the 4x100m relay freestyle on Sunday, July 26, 2009 during the World Swimming Championships in Rome. Shortly before stepping up to the starting block, the University of Texas senior leaned down to stretch and his suit tore.

"I kind of freaked out for just a second," Berens said. "I felt like [the hole] was almost down to my knees. I felt like I was putting on a pretty good show."

He did. And the US qualified for finals and won.

Urian best actor Sid Lucero top-bills Cinemalaya Film Festival entry Astig, a full-length digital movie produced by Boy Abunda and Boy So, written by Jerry Gracio, and directed by GB Sampedro. The story revolves around the lives of four Mañilenos and reflects the face and persona of the city of Manila.

Sid plays Baste, the eldest child and the only boy in the brood of seven. He stands as the breadwinner and father figure of the family.

Blind Waves: Young Actor's Nude Photos

Tita Swarding's article on Pinoy Parazzi claims that there is a nude photo of a young actor who regularly appears on an afternoon soap circulating in the internet. The said young actor has foreign blood but speaks fluent tagalog! A lot of readers think that it is PBB Teen Hunk Matt Evans! Is this true? So far, no nude photos of Matt has reached this author. Matt has already been a victim of this kind of blind items and as it turned out, it was not him on the video scandal. It just looked a bit like him. Lovi Poe: Walang Hanggang Paalam

Lovi Poe's most mature role to date. She plays a girl who is torn between love for a boy (Joem Bascon) and love for a man who is old enough to be her father (Jacky Woo). Jake Roxas plays a homosexual detective in search for Lovi. He has a lover (Rico Barrera). After being rated unsuited for public viewing by MTRCB, 'Walang Hanggang Paalam' finally had its world premiere last Saturday, July 25, 2009, 6:15 pm at the CCP Little theater for the Cinemalaya/Netpac competition.

The third film of filmmakers Paolo Villaluna and Ellen Ramos, 'Walang Hanggang Paalam' is the final installment to their “love trilogy” (after 'Ilusyon' and 'Selda') where they explore the nuances and tragedy of human interaction. Walang Hanggang Paalam tells the story of four lonely souls whose search for the meaning of love will conclude in tragic self-discoveries.

An 18-year old free spirit, Maria (Lovi Poe) decides to finally lose her virginity to her boyfriend Ryan (Joem Bascon) by eloping to Baguio on a weekend getaway. Arturo (Jake Roxas,) a private investigator facing his own demons, has been tapped by Maria’s family to search for her. At the same time, a 48 year-old Japanese businessman, Yoshi (Jacky Woo,) upon the discovery of his terminal illness, decides to go back to the Philippines to search for his long-lost Filipina love who left him decades ago. Their paths will lead them to a hotel in Baguio but each will face a crossroad that will conclude in a resigned understanding that we cannot escape ourselves.

'Walang Hanggang Paalam' is a disquieting treatise on how love, like life itself, is underlined and decided by fate, and like their previous two films, Paolo Villaluna and Ellen Ramos’ third film is an exercise in classicist forms, delivering a stylish and a very restrained approach in narrative filmmaking.

Richard Gutierrez Sued By P.A.'s Widow

Richard Gutierrez is being sued by the wife (Lorayne Pardo) of his personal assistant, Norman Prado, who died in a car accident with Richard Gutierrez.

Lorayne filed last July 23, 2009 Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide against Richard Gutierrez after refusing the offer of Richard to give Norman's children educational plans until college. According to Richard, Lorayne wanted four million pesos instead.

Even before the death of Norman, Richard was already helping Norman's eldest child go to school which he kept secret from his mom, Annabelle Rama.

Bukas, Wednesday ang balik nina Kris Bernal at Aljur Abrenica from Bohol kung saan sila nag-shooting ng I’ll Be Waiting For You ng Regal Entertainment. Napakaraming balita ng shooting sa Bohol, hindi lang ang sobrang PDA ng dalawa na ikina-turn off daw ng mga Boholanos at ang sunud-sunod na isyu kay Baron Geisler.

May tsika ring dumating sa Bohol si Rich Asuncion (na taga-Bohol talaga) at nakita silang magkasama ni Aljur sa isang restaurant. Alam kaya ito ni Kris? Paano nakawala sa kanya si Aljur at ano ang naging paalam?

Tinanong namin si Kris kung nai-insecure siya kay Rich dahil kahit siya ang official loveteam ni Aljur, si Rich naman daw ang real girlfriend ng actor?

Naalala naming matagal sumagot ng “hindi ako nai-insecure sa kanya” si Kris at sa follow-up question namin kung friends sila, “hindi” rin ang sagot nito.

“Pero ’pag nagkikita kami, nagkukumustahan naman kami,” bawi ni Kris.

Bea ‘yummier’ Alonzo and Sam ‘good kisser’ Milby: Match found?

Bea Alonzo and Sam Milby are now being linked romantically after admitting that they find the other “yummier” and “a good kisser.”

In previous interviews to promote their film, “And I Love You So,” the two said that their friendship has become stronger after spending more time shooting for the movie.

Such statements lead others to speculate on a brewing romance.

“Hindi mo naman pwedeng i-close ang doors sa possibilities, so hindi natin alam,” Bea said on the matter during her contract signing with Star Cinema early July.

She laughed when asked if Sam was a good kisser in the movie.

“Oo naman,” Bea agreed. “Pero para sa trabaho naman yun.”

Sam was vocal about his appreciation for Bea’s slimmer figure. “Yummier siya ngayon kasi in shape na in shape siya,” he referred to Bea who shed 15 pounds for her role.

Bea described Sam as a gentleman.

“At sobrang purehearted niya. Sobrang nakakatuwa kasi sobrang gullible niya…kasi tayo sobrang jaded na tayo sa mga nangyayari sa paligid natin, pero siya, hindi.

“And mahilig din siya manlibre sa set. Konting sabi mo lang ng, ‘Ay ang sarap naman ng ganitong food,’ [ay] bigla na ‘yang magpapabili for everyone,” she said.

In “The Buzz” on July 19, Sam was asked to whom he would say “And I love you so.”

“To Bea,” he said. “She’s been so nice to me the whole time… Malaki siyang tulong sa buhay ko, she’s been so caring.”

Bea rejoined by echoing her earlier statement: “Sa totoo lang, si Sam ang isa sa mga pinaka-purehearted na tao na nakilala ko. Hindi ko sinasabing childish siya, sinasabi ko yun kasi di ba yung mga bata, wala sa kanilang masamang tinapay? Laging magaganda yung intentions nila, [at] ganun [din] siya.”

In “And I Love You So,” Bea plays Lara and Sam plays Chris in a story about second chances. Their characters cross paths after Bea’s role loses her husband.

“It’s a mature role,” Sam said. “"First time naming dalawa na may love scene sa movie so [that means] first timers kami."

He added that Bea will be donning a two-piece bathing suit in one of the scenes.

“Ang gist nun, first time akong natuto na mag-out of town mag-isa so nag-decide ako na maging adventurous. Basta abangan na lang nila kasi baka masabi ko pa yung twists and turns nung story,” said Bea.

Should people also await a romantic twist to her and Sam’s story?

“Anything is possible naman. We’re both single and we’ve been friends for a long time,” Sam said.
