Sam grew up with a Filipina mother native to Tago, Surigao del Sur and an American father. He became a heartthrob after leaving the Pinoy Big Brother House in November 2005. His rendition of 'Only You' was a huge hit that ABS-CBN's Tagalog-dubbed Korean soap of the same title used it as a theme song. He later on played the title role of the same Korean tv series along with Angel Locsin and Diether Ocampo. Sam also released a self-titled debut album in early 2006, which was repackaged in the third quarter of 2006.
Sam's first major film debut was 'Close to You'(2006) as Lance. He also starred in the movie 'You Got Me'(2007) as Kevin Robles with Toni Gonzaga and Zanjoe Marudo and another movie with Toni Gonzaga and Kristine Hermosa entitled 'My Big Love'as Macky.
Sam was in the top rating ABS-CBN primetime soap opera, 'Maging Sino Ka Man'(2006) where he delivered his very famous line 'I never said that I love you!' as Jaime 'JB' Roxas-Berenguer. And he reprised his role in the sequel of this successful soap 'Maging Sino Ka Man: Ang Pagbabalik'(2007).
He also appeared in 'Dyosa'(2008) as Adonis where he had a very controversial scene in the eleventh episode which shows Adonis transforming to human!
